Domaine Rimbaud is a magnificent, historic “bastide” nestled in Provencal vineyards in the Bouches du Rhône, just 20 minutes north of Aix-en-Provence. This impressive property, which is set on nine hectares of land, has 8 bedrooms, all en-suite, and a 15m x 5m heated swimming pool.

This charming structure dates as far back as 1700, and parts of the main buildings remain from these times, while the adjoining building was historically used for silk production.

Indoors as well as outdoors, understated style is infused with the luxuries of modern-day life, for a feeling of tranquil wellbeing.

Old charm meets modern comfort

Ample space has been created for entertaining . The main entrance of Domain Rimbaud opens onto a large living area consisting of a US-style kitchen with central island workspace. It is well equipped, with a Lacanche gas stove and other features and appliances perfect for any “chef à domicile”. The expansive casual dining table alongside seats 14 guests.

The adjacent living area here has two sofas and two armchairs.

Also on the ground floor is a formal dining area in a vaulted room that has a table for 10-12 guests, and a sitting room featuring a working original stone fireplace, flat-screen TV, two large comfortable sofas, and coffee table. There is also a fully tuned piano.

From the ground floor you have access to the wine cellar, which is fully stocked with good local wines. A fitness room (home gym) opens onto the garden and has a cross-trainer, running machine, weights and yoga mats, as well as a TV.

There is also a single bedroom with shower room on this level – perfect for an au pair or unexpected extra guest.

Head upstairs to bed

The first floor of Domaine Rimbaud can be accessed  through the fitness room or via the central staircase. Here you will find a bedroom with single bed (120x190cm) and private shower room. A second bedroom has a double bed (180x200cm) with separate family bathroom (shower, bathtub and WC).

The air-conditioned master double bedroom is up a few steps. It has a 180x200cm bed, a large dressing room and private bathroom (bathtub, shower, basin, separate WC).

The second floor of Domaine Rimbaud has a further two bedrooms. The first has a double bed (180x200cm), sofa and coffee table. A staircase leads to the private bathroom (bathtub, shower, basin and WC). The second bedroom on this level is a little quirky, as it is accessed through its bathroom, which has a bathtub at the entrance, separate WC and shower. Steps lead up to the bedroom, which has a small double bed (160x200cm).

A further (eaves) level houses the last two bedrooms. The first has a flexible arrangement of either two single beds (90cm each) or the option to push these together to make up a double bed. There is a separate shower room and WC. Note that the ceiling is low in places due to the structural wooden beams.

Finally, a children’s bedroom has a single wrought iron bed and its own bathroom with a shower and WC.

The great outdoors

You’re spoilt for choice with variety of dining areas at this property. The lovely breakfast terrace, which has a table set for 8 people, is accessible from the living room and offers an incredible view over the surrounding countryside.

The large shaded terrace leading off the rear of the property also has a spot for el fresco dining with a 14 seater table. Or relax in the outside salon with comfy sofas and armchairs where you can enjoy an afternoon sundowner while watching a game of pétanque (boulles) on the nearby court.

Domaine Rimbault is set on nine hectares of private land with forest, wild green areas, and tended gardens planted with trees, shrubs lavender and other mediterranean species. During the summer months, the garden comes into its own.

The large gravel courtyard filled with mature trees leads to a grand staircase directly down the pool area. Sun-beds and tables with umbrellas create the perfect atmosphere for holidays. Strolling around the large natural estate grounds full of old truffle trees can lead to walks through neighbouring vineyards.

There is also a barbecue (gas Weber). The 15mx5m heated pool, which has a max depth of 2.8m, is secured by an electric hard cover. There is also plenty of shaded parking.

Surrounding area

Rognes is a nice Provencal village located between Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, not far from the banks of the Durance river. The area around Rognes, with its vineyards is a famous Provencal wine country and the cultivation of the truffles has been honoured for some years.

The Domaine Rimbaud, is situated about 1.2km from the centre of Rognes which has shops and restaurants.  There is easy access to the highways and to the hilltop villages of Provence.
