Comfortable, charming, central apartment

The term ‘pied-à-terre’ comes to mind when describing Le Nid d’Hirondelles. This charming one-bed apartment in central Lourmarin is one that you’ll want to migrate back to, year after year. It sits high above the bustle of the streets below, and affords you a birds-eye view from the little balcony.

As its name suggests, this “nest of swallows” is nestled at the very top of a 16th century structure that still has many original features. Off a narrow lane just a few doors from the town’s inner social hub, lies Le Nid d’Hirondelles. It’s perfect for anyone who wants a hideaway amidst the bustle of a beautiful and lively tourist town, with its many art galleries, boutique shops and 13 restaurants.

Size isn’t everything

Le Nid d’Hirondelles is a small but cleverly appointed and comfortable apartment that has been thoughtfully renovated and completely updated. It has an open-concept kitchen/living area that opens onto a terrace which has a commanding 180º view of the rooftops of Lourmarin, with the Luberon mountains in the distance.

You’ll also have a fabulous view out onto some of the stalls that are set up for the Friday morning market – great for people-watching!

The bedroom is bright and spacious and features a queen-size bed. The bathroom has a beton ciré Italian shower and a corner cupboard contains a small washing machine.

Everything you need

Other amenities include a hair dryer, dishwasher, a wall-mounted air-conditioning unit, iron, wi-fi, iPod dock, television, telephone, small Weber barbecue, and an umbrella and sun lounger. Apartment was really centrally located, beautifully furnished and luxurious. Walter met us with the keys, and even though we arrived much later than planned, he was very welcoming and helpful. The apartment is at the top of a really old building which is very well kept. The apartment has lovely decor everything needed for a very comfortable stay. Lourmarin is a fantastic place and a great base to explore the rest of the Luberon.

Thanks much to Walter for making our stay in Lourmarin as easy and comfortable as possible… the ‘Birds Nest’ is the perfect place for a couple looking for a retreat, while having access to the local cafes and restaurants within a few steps… also wonderfully located for exploring the surrounding hilltop villages and sites. The accommodations are quaint but updated and very comfortable – cheers!

I arrived alone a few days ahead of my partner, so was a little nervous but there was absolutely no need to be. Walter and I emailed before my arrival with details of where to park. There’s a free car park just up the little street from the apartment and arriving on a Saturday afternoon about 1.30 I had no problem finding a space (and no problem every time I popped out of Lourmarin during the week). I met Walter at a café just at the bottom of the street which was very convenient. From the description, the property was all we’d expected – and more. Positioned at the top of what is apparently the oldest building in Lourmarin, it wasn’t purpose built as a top floor apartment – so be prepared for some steep steps if your luggage is heavy! Despite this, it was absolutely worth the climb. The apartment is perfectly positioned for being at the centre of everything – but surprisingly well soundproofed (we slept through the market set up on Friday morning and apparently the bar below us had a party one night but we didn’t hear a thing!). There’s a small air con unit which keeps the apartment cool on a hot day – and the terrace is super for breakfast, a lunch time snack – or evening drink – and you have a good view of the surrounding countryside. The apartment itself has everything you could need for a week’s stay; the fixtures, fittings, crockery and cooking utensils are all of good quality. It’s simple but all tastefully decorated. We were after a location that would give us the chance to experience village life – and this is absolutely the case – you step out into the bustling streets – but it’s also easy to retreat back to the apartment to enjoy your own quiet time (or a little glass of the local wine which is great!). Walter was incredibly helpful and provided every possible piece of advice we could need.

    4. Anonymous - France says:

    5. Jason - Overland Park says:

Fantastic week in May at this perfectly located and equipped apartment. Enjoyed the terrace every day, loved strolling this village and easy day trips to many others. Walter was truly amazing when refinery workers went on strike and no one could get gas nearby. He kept us informed of the situation, developed a plan B and then notified us immediately when gas became available so we were one of the first in line to fill up! He also gave great recommendations for our first visit to France! Hope to be back some day!

Beautifully finished apartment located in one of Provence’s best villages. Convenient parking, updated decor, great shower, private terrace, and attentive manager make this one hard to beat! Walter gave excellent travel and restaurant advice and offered to bring us bikes during our stay for a low rental rate. In hindsight, we should have taken him up on the bikes since French refinery workers went on strike while we were there and we were unable to buy gas for 3 days! Walter kept us informed of the developments and called us when a local station got a gas delivery so we were one of the first in line to fill up!! On Friday we enjoyed watching the market crowd from our terrace and then had the pleasure of hearing live music from the restaurant below in the evening…perfect last night in France as we devoured our market chicken and vegetables with wine!

    7. Trisha - Georgia says:

My husband and I stayed for two and a half weeks at the end of October. The apartment is perfectly situated and the roof terrace ideal. Walter did an amazing job of making sure everything about the rental went smoothly. We will definitely return.

    8. Tony - N Yorkshire, UK says:

Whatever Walter is being paid by the owners it is not enough. His advice and kindness made all the difference. A great apartment with a superb manager. The apartment is very well equipped. Despite being in the heart of town sleeping is easy. Euro for Euro by far the best place we have stayed in.
