A Provençal paradise amid lavender, figs and olive trees

Welcome to Nouveau Roucas, a little paradise just 3km from Lourmarin, one of the lively and most glamorous villages in the Luberon. Lourmarin has numerous boutiques and galleries, 18 restaurants and a burgeoning and popular Friday market. Coupled with the local history and culture, its status as a prime tourist destination is famous.

At Nouveau Roucas you will have the best of both worlds; relax in the quiet and tranquility of the countryside but be just minutes away from the amenities of several of the most appealing villages in the Luberon.

The two beautifully restored farmsteads that make up Nouveau Roucas are set within a fragrant garden of typical Provençal flora – figs, lavender, olives and rosemary. The two houses can sleep a total of 10 people, making ideal for a large group or two families holidaying together. Set against the majestic Grand Luberon mountains, Nouveau Roucas is nestled between farmland, woodlands and vineyards.

Main house (Mas du Bassin):

Although decorated in traditional style, clever use of light gives the property a contemporary feel. Modern indoor amenities include Sky satellite television, DVD player, and an iPod docking station. If needed, there is underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs.

The generously sized kitchen has been renovated with a high-quality waxed concrete finish, stainless steel units and a large central island for food preparation. All the mod-cons are there, including Liebherer fridge and wine chiller, Bosch dishwasher, a fitted espresso coffee maker and a juicer. Just off the kitchen are full laundry facilities as well as a separate toilet.

The spacious downstairs is anchored at one end by the fully equipped kitchen and, at the other end, by an elegant and perfectly appointed formal, library-style sitting room, with open fireplace and ample seating.

Double doors lead from this lounge area to a covered patio terrace, with a 12-seater table and chairs, perfect for an aperitif in the evening or for an al fresco lunch.

In the centre of the ground floor living area is an open fireplace, great for chilly evenings, surrounded by comfy armchairs and an overstuffed sofa, among other Provençal-style furnishings. The long dining table alongside is conducive to lazy lunches and relaxed evenings over a bottle of wine with family and friends. Two sets of double doors flow out onto the main terrace of Nouveau Roucas.

Upstairs, this lovely home has two large, light-filled double bedrooms, one with en-suite bathroom consisting of large shower, while the second has a charming bath with hand-held shower and separate toilet. One of the bedrooms has a balcony overlooking the surrounding fields and the patio below, complete with trellised grapevine.

Annex house (Mas des Rocailles):

Mas des Rocailles was transformed from a 200-year-old sheepfold into a comfortable, three-double-bedroom villa. It was designed to a very high standard and has an elegant and relaxing atmosphere indoors, including a large open fireplace in the comfortable sitting room. Central heating is provided by radiators.

Up a spiral staircase in the centre of the building, this lovely home has three large, light-filled double bedrooms. There are two large bathrooms, one with a generous contemporary wetroom shower, basin and adjacent toilet. The second bathroom has a large bath, basin and separate shower, plus there’s a second separate toilet room with basin.

Outdoor space

Nouveau Roucas’s garden, with spacious terrace and a lovely relaxing pool area, make it a little hidden paradise. There are several outdoor seating areas where you can enjoy enchanting views of the Luberon Natural Regional Park, including a spacious covered terrace, a pool garden, small oak forest and bassin (swimming pool) it was designed to create an elegant and relaxing atmosphere.

There is a the inviting covered terrace that is perfect for afternoon barbecues, an expansive open terrace with sun loungers, a formal garden with picturesque lily pond – and numerous nooks and crannies where one can steal away to read a book or do a bit of inspired writing or drawing.

There’s a traditional rock garden (jardin de rocailles in French, hence the name) with a large fountain enveloped in lilies. The garden at Nouveau Roucas is well established and the heady aroma of lavender will surround you as you lounge in any of the charming, secluded spots in the garden.

There is ample space for children to play and explore without being out of sight of adult supervision, and the shared heated pool is a magnet for adults and children alike. There is also plenty of parking under shady trees.

      Relaxing family holiday

The forests covering the hills that surround these holiday homes are vastly awesome, and the houses themselves are just fantastic. The swimming pool is great and the gardens surrounding the houses offer a relaxing atmosphere, with a perfect contrast between shade and sunlight. The houses are great and the bed in the centre bedroom of the first house is so comfortable. No complaints. This is just one of the nicest places one could spend one’s holidays in the sough of France. Many thanks to Walter who offered great assistance.

A fantastic location and a beautiful property

What a magical week! The weather was superb and the markets at Saint Remy, Lourmarin and Cucuron were really great. This is a lovely part of France and we were fortunate to have such a tranquil and relaxing week. Walter was a mine of information – we didn’t have enough time to do all the things he suggested, but very much enjoyed the evening fireworks at La Tour d’Aigues. We will definitely come back!

      Will return

We have had a truly magnificent time in an area that we have known and loved for decades, in a house and home that in terms of taste and style could almost be our own! My wife Jenny, a professional viola player, did justice to the glorious Steinway! We hope to return.

      Wonderful peaceful stay

Foxes and brown/red? Squirrels drinking from the ponds. Nurtured a baby falcon? – Charlie – please keep feeding him – he can’t fly. Loved Saignon & Cucuron – less tourists!

Wonderful stay in a wonderful house in a wonderful location giving 13 of us from Sydney, Stratford-upon-Avon and Geneva the chance to catch up and chill out. Our thanks to Walter who told us all the shortcuts and made all the reservations at the right restaurants.

      A magical week

We spent a few magical days here in Provence. Our first time as a family – and what a first! The setting the house – all contribute to an incredible “de payseurment” – what a way to pause life, recharge batteries and enjoy the simple pleasures in all – all thanks to the careful attention and detail which infuses this house, and to the pleasant charm and care of Walter – I will always cherish this time. We were all happy here.

      Provencal pleasure

This property is fabulous. Well equipped, stylish design throughout, and excellent quality furniture around the pool in which to lounge, read a book and drink lots of chilled wine. It is a great house to either never move from or to use as a base to explore the wonderful Provencal countryside all around. We could not have loved the place more.

    13. Jonathan Sinclair - UK says:

      Excellent property with beautiful location

The property was in a stunning location with beautiful views from all of the bedrooms. Walter was most helpful in making recommendations and we felt as if we were in a family home. Some of the kitchen equipment could have been updated (blunt knives) and the only real challenge was that the stairs were quite difficult for my elderly mother in law to manage however that was a minor issue.

      Stylish and relaxing

I and all my guests relished our time in this handsome converted farmhouse, set amidst wheat fields and vineyards. The decor is stylish but restrained, just right for a Provencal country home. The rooms are large and full of light, with lovely views in every direction. Every modern convenience (except microwave oven) is provided. The WiFi works well and there is a broad selection of channels, including English-speaking ones, on the big flat-screen TV. Throwing open the terrace doors each morning to a flood of Provencal sunshine got the day off to a heart-lifting start.

The country setting affords privacy and yet the village of Lourmarin is little more than five minutes away by car. Well-known ‘perched villages’ of the Luberon, e.g., Gordes, Lacoste, Menerbes, are over the first range of hills, less than an hour away – we visited and revisited. Lourmarin is not perched, so not as bewitching to behold from afar; but it gets my vote for best village life with lots of appealing little shops, good restaurants, sunny sidewalk cafes, and a fine Friday morning market.
